Five steps to get you out the rut that you’re in.

If you do nothing, it only gets worse. And you know it.

You’re stuck.

Maybe your marriage is in a rut.

Maybe your career path seems as hopeful as that slightly fresh roadkill spread across the dotted yellow line on the way home.

You warmup on unmotivated for breakfast.

You nibble on bored for lunch.

And you dine on blah every single night.

You’re not a complainer.
You’re not Negative Nelly.
But, truth be told, you’re flatlined and ready for a new frontier.

It’s no way to live and you know it.

The problem is, you can’t seem to break the cycle.

Maybe you’ve even prayed, but still, you’re not hearing anything.

Often in life we all hit these roadblocks. The real question is, what are you going to do about it?

You’re standing at a crossroads, and if you do nothing, it will only get worse.

You know, I’ve seen many, many people come to me with this very same story. Good people. People just like you. Good people that are just stuck.

I’m going to show you a proven tactic for getting out of the ditch. It’s going to seem so simple that you’re almost not going to believe it. However, trust me, I’ve walked with hundreds of people that are stuck, and there is a simple pathway out of the mud if you’re willing to do something about the fact that you’re sick and tired of being sick … and tired.

No. I’m not going to try and sell you anything.

There’s no product pitch at the end of this thing.

Getting “unstuck” is really about doing something. Doing. Something.

Here’s some proven tools I’ve used to help people find their way out of the ditch.

Step One: Own It.

No kidding. There’s something about admitting you’re stuck and refusing to be stuck any longer that honestly can change the momentum.

Stop playing the victim. It’s so en vogue these days to be a victim. Stop that. You’re smarter than that.

Own the situation. Take responsibility for what you want to see happen.

Step Two:  Create A Plan.

I cannot tell you how critical it is that you literally write down a plan. And then follow it!

See, my problem for years was that I always thought that a plan had to be complex. I always fought the feeling that it couldn’t be effective if it didn’t come complete with analytics, charts, data, and proven success models.

As a pastor, I’ve literally used the back of an envelope to help people sketch out a plan for ending addiction, stagnant prayer lives, marriage ruts, you name it.

Let me tell you something I’ve learned the hard way:  more often than not God doesn’t reveal the entire road ahead of you. In fact, most of the time He doesn’t do that.

The Bible says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”  [Psalm 119:105]That’s not a spotlight. That’s more like a headlamp, but, it is light! And you need some light.

Let me tell you this, and I promise it’s true: creating a plan is an immediate stress reducer.

I cannot tell you how many people have sat in my office, or my SUV, or how many times I’ve sat down with coffee and after listening to their story, we pull out paper and craft a small plan of action … and you can literally watch the stress melt from their countenance.

Why? Because they stopped being a victim and started owning the situation. A simple plan gives you a grip.

But know this, plans only work if you do this next thing.

Step Three:  Take The Next Right Step

Notice I didn’t say run full steam ahead.

Notice I didn’t describe the next 14 action items that you must do in the next 30 days.

I said take the “next” right step.

Momentum is a funny and strange thing.

When you do the next right thing, it breeds confidence that change is possible. And friend, God is in the transformation business. He can change your situation today, if you’ll let Him.

Do the next right thing. And watch the momentum shift.

Two Bonus Tips:

Surround Yourself With Wise People

You wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve seen people experience insane, incredible deliverance simply by putting wise, righteous people around them.

So often when you’re stuck, you have the wrong voices in your head.

If you were a professional golfer, and you were struggling with your golf game, would you hang around people who are pathetic at golf? No. Never.

If you were in debt up to your eyeballs, would you listen to people who are horrible at money management? No. You’d never do that. That’s insane.

So audit your friendships. Chances are, you’re trying really hard to be an eagle, but you’re running around with turkeys. Eagles don’t flock with turkeys.

That’s what I love about being around Jesus followers. They still have imperfections for sure, but when you intentionally put yourself around people who are experiencing victory in Christ, you’re going to wake up one day and notice you’re not living in defeat like you once were.

Pray. But Not Like You’ve Been Praying. Try This …

So many people ask God for deliverance, but they never experience change. There’s a reason. More often than not, it’s because they ask God for wisdom, but they won’t follow through with the wisdom He provides.

If you want to see change happen, you must pray, but you must pray with resolve to obey God when He tells you what that “next right step” is for you.
