We arrived at Room in the Inn in downtown Nashville September 28 carrying dinner and hoping to be a blessing. We left with empty dishes and hearts touched mightily.
Seven members of the Empty Nesters 1 group and Steve Smith, a ClearView member and frequent volunteer, served dinner to about 30 homeless military veterans working hard to recover from past mistakes. They have progressed to living at Room in the Inn in a dorm or efficiency apartments.
We were most impressed by the godly gratitude of these men ranging in age from young to elderly. Their faces told of hard lives and struggle. Their smiles spoke of hope as they went around the table sharing things they are thankful for.
We appreciated their gratitude for the fried chicken supper. However, that was minor compared to their thanks to God for the privilege of serving their country, for a roof over their heads, and Room in the Inn employees and volunteers helping them to make a new beginning. They are grateful for their fellow travelers in the program. They have hope for a better future.
This was the second visit for some of our group, and we hope to return more regularly in the future. ClearView provides a warm place to sleep, dinner, breakfast and a sack lunch to Room in the Inn guests two nights per week.
