Portland Team Updates

Our High School Students are working in Portland this week (May 30 - June 5). Here are updates from the team.

Day 7

Today was a free day in Portland!   We started the day with a 2 mile hike at Wahclella Falls - absolutely beautiful trails.  Next we want to Multnomah Falls where we saw the spectacular 611 foot waterfall.  After lunch we were off to Horsetail Falls where we relaxed and some even went swimming... inspite of the freezing cold water!

We ate dinner at the North Portland Kruger food trucks. Everyone chose their own and had things like Thai food, chicken pot pie, Mexican fare, and burgers.

After dinner we went to Ruby Jewel Scoops for some ice cream.  They are known for make your own ice cream sandwiches.  You can choose your cookies and ice cream.

We travel home to Franklin tomorrow after an incredible week of service and fun in Portland.  Our group loves this city and many have already expressed interest in returning. The church planters we worked with are passionate Christ followers who believe in bringing the gospel to Portland.  We are blessed to be a part of their efforts!

Day 6

Today we went to the Northwest part of Portland which is home to both Nike and Intel.  We met with Blake Sanders, a Remedy City Church intern, for a quick orientation meeting then went door to door in teams giving out flyers for a neighborhood movie night this summer.  Remedy City Church is a start up church begun by Josh and Amy Carter who moved to the area 8 months ago.  Currently the church meets in their home each week.

After lunch we went prayer walking through another neighborhood in the area.  Residents here are not necessarily receptive to the idea of church but are very friendly, kind, and easy to talk to.

Before dinner we relaxed at a local park for a while.  It was a beautiful sunny warm day.  Dinner was at Mod Pizza where you build your own.  We loved it!  After that we want to Insomnia coffee shop to round out our day.

Day 5

Today we served at the Portland Abbey Hereford House food pantry and clothes closet.  We cleaned, reorganized, and restocked food shelves in the pantry then helped bag up clothes and other items in the clothes closet.

Our next stop was Grace Christian Fellowship where we met Pastor Kelley and helped with organizing a clothes closet, cleaning bathrooms, dusting around the church, wiping baseboards, and vacuuming.

Next we explored downtown Portland and enjoyed dinner at Lardo, a visit to the famous Powells Bookstore, then dessert at Voodoo Donuts.    Another amazing day!

Day 4

Today was another great day for our team.  We decided to ride the public transportation of Portland to our service location.   We rode the Max rail and buses. It was a great experience and we got to see how many locals travel around the city.

We served at the Portland Rescue Mission.  It is the women and children's division called Shepherd's Door which is a recovery place for women with destructive life habits.   Most of the residents are there due to drugs and alcohol abuse.  They live at the facility and work either in the kitchen, on the yard crew, in reception/donations, or in personal care.

We spent time washing the vans that belong to the Rescue Mission, boxing up books to be moved to another location, weeding the playground and surrounding areas, and weeding/mulching the garden area.

After a day at the Rescue Mission we came back to the hotel and went to Burrtito House for dinner.

What an incredible day of learning how Portland cares for women and children who are struggling.  It was a blessing to serve there and be a part of that ministry.

Day 3

Today we experienced a little bit of the Bhutanese culture.  We visited two homes of  a Bhutanese church planter.  We removed our shoes before entering the homes and witnessed a very different style of praying.  Each person prays out loud at the same time.   There are immigrants coming into Portland from Bhutan who will be received by these church families.  The church as grown from a couple of families to that of 14 home locations.

Our cultures are very different but the love of the Lord is the same.  We serve and honor the same amazing God.

We went to Tilt for dinner - a local hamburger place.  After that we drove over to Salt and Straw for some ice cream.  Both were amazing!  We are enjoying trying places unique to Portland.

Looking forward to more adventures tomorrow!

Day 2

We started our day at the Mosaic church held at a local school. It's a new campus extension of it's parent church.  We got to share in a special donut celebration for their 2 year anniversary of the church beginnings.  Very fun!  It was a wonderful morning of worship.

We at lunch at a pod of food trucks which offered everything from barbecue, Mexican, and southern cooking.  Portland is rich with unique foods.

After lunch we met with Chandra and Justin Martin, church planters with Bridge City Church, for an orientation to the Portland area.  After the meeting, students went out into the community for prayer walking then returned back for a pizza dinner.

After dinner we divided into teams and went on a Portland scavenger hunt all over the area and even into downtown.  So much fun!

Pray for our team as we continue to help Bridge City Church connect with the community by establishing and strengthening relationships and sharing the gospel.

Day 1 - Travel Day

Our team made it safely to Portland.  We flew to New Orleans, then to Kansas City, then arrived here in Portland around 7:00pm.   We are super excited to begin our work tomorrow in this amazing city!
