Portland Mission Trip - May 2016

Update 4

Today was another incredible day serving in North Portland! We started our day by prayer walking in the neighborhood and thanking Jesus for all the ways he moved this week. We also thanked Him for everyone who came to the block party last night. We prayed for continued growth for Bridge City Church through the conversations and the connections that were made.

We were able to order and provide a new lawn buddy for a lady who has a spine injury but loves to garden. We her met while prayer walking and found out that her equipment was broken. We wanted to show her love by providing a new one. Justin and some of our team were able to bring it to her this morning, and she was very excited. Margie is not a believer but our prayer is that through continued love and having a relationship with her, her heart will soften towards the Gospel.

We spent the afternoon getting to serve the local Burmese community alongside Pastor Muana. We were able to practice conversational English and help some of the children with their reading homework. Pastor Muana started a church in Portland called Bethel Zomi, and they have over 100 Burmese people that attend. It was really cool hearing his story and how the Lord planted him in this area. God is at work in this community and through Pastor Muana. It was awesome to be a part of that today!

We ended the night getting dinner with Justin. We were able to spend some time at his house with the whole Martin family. It has been the biggest blessing getting to serve alongside them and Bridge City Church this week. God is at work in Portland and I'm so excited to see the ways He continues to draw people closer to Him. Please pray for the Martin's and Bridge City Church as they continue to dig in their heels and share the love of our sweet Savior. There is no doubt that His plans are big! How awesome is it that we get to partner with them for the greater Kingdom work!

Update 3

“What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.” 1 Corinthians 3:4-7

When we partner with church plants, teams are used to help lay down the foundation to reach a community for Christ. Sometimes, we do this by prayer walking through a neighborhood. Sometimes, it’s by administering spiritual surveys to gain a better understanding of the community. Sometimes, it’s by passing out free coffee and invitations to a neighborhood block party. Each of these actions are completed in an effort to build relationships within the community. And ultimately, the growth comes from God and his graciousness.

Last night, we were able to partner with Bridge City Church as we hosted a block party. Our hope was that out of the 100 invitations we passed out, some of the recipients would attend.

Over 60 people (young adults and families) came for fellowship and food. There were 3 families who connected with Justin and Chandra and shared their desire for community! This was a big night for Bridge City Church, and our team was so thrilled to be a part of it. Please continue to pray that the connections that were made will be fruitful for the sake of the Gospel and reaching the community for Christ.

Update 2

Yesterday was an amazing, full day! We started out our day by worshipping with Door Of Hope. We heard a great message on Daniel and had a wonderful time of worship with the people of Portland. After church, we headed to a place on the river called Island Cafe for lunch. It had a beautiful view and the food was fabulous.

Later, we went to a local grocery store where we did a coffee giveaway! We were able to engage with a lot of people and tell them about the block party that we are helping Bridge City Church host tonight at the park. It's amazing how a simple gesture of free coffee can put a big smile on someone's face.

After the giveaway, we headed to the park to continue our prayer walking and hand out flyers for the party. Our team was able to pray for some people during this time and the community as a whole. We are excited to see how the Lord is going to use these things we've been doing for His greater plan.

We finished the day by joining the Martin's community group at their house. We had dinner with them and dug into Galatians for our study. It was really incredible to see how well they love their community. We heard their hearts for the lost and hurting. We are excited for the next couple of days and the work we will continue to do alongside Bridge City Church!

Update 1

Yesterday was our first full day of ministry. We were able to help Bridge City Church (BCC) move a single mother. She is someone they have been ministering to recently. The lady was so grateful that we cared for her. We were able to share with her that it was the love of Christ that compelled us to serve her by moving her possessions. The staff of BCC will be able to follow up with her in the future based our ministry today.

We spent two hours prayer walking over the area where BCC is trying to reach for Christ. As we were praying on the streets, we had the privilege of talking with people in the community about the Gospel. We were also able to hear their stories.

Our connections today are valuable investments in the community for BCC to follow up on after we are gone. We prayed with some people on the street and simply listened to others. We invited the people we spoke to about the block party we will be hosting on Monday.
